Free Computer Consultant's Tip-Of-The-Week e-Zine for June 29, 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------

This week I have a two-for-one tip.

1). Avoid Adobe Products

Why? They are slow, bloated, and the company could care less about
you.

This weekend I'm rather busy. For my business, it's end of month
and end of quarter. Besides that, as I have mentioned recently, I
am moving my website to a new host; with a new look (no, the look
isn't finalized yet, so don't despair!). I hope the site will be
faster for one, especially for those of you still struggling with
dial-up internet.

The last thing I needed was a problem, and Adobe gave it to me. My
new Core 2 Duo 2.4 is supposed to be fast, but there are occasional
agonizing delays opening email, web browser or Windows Explorer.
I'm 99% sure it's because of Adobe 7.0 Standard - which hooks into
everything. I needed to update the software as there are multiple
patches available.

First patch failed to install, in fact, bombed. Now, every time I
do anything on the PC I get the Microsoft installer, then an error
message repeated about 4 times.

Head to Google, seems to be only about 1 page of info and that's
out of Adobe's knowledge base. When I try to open that page I get a
script error, please try again. And again, and again. I've had this
before with Adobe support.

Here's where tip #2 comes in:

2.) Instead of searching in Adobe's site, or Google groups where I
found the link to Adobe's site, I entered enough info into Google's
normal search to get the same page. I clicked the link, and sure
enough, script error; click the back button to get to the Google
results.

Then I instead clicked the hyperlink "Cached" underneath the entry.
This brings up the page out of Google's massive database of pages.
Voila', there was the info I needed. Many times I have found the
info I was looking for after a site had been taken down or had
server problems by using this often overlooked option.

So you can't avoid Adobe products? Sure you can. Get the PDF reader
from my Free Tools page on my website.

Want to create PDF's too? Don't buy Adobe Standard, get the PDF
writer from the same page on my website.

I even decided against using Dreamweaver for redesigning my site
since Adobe now owns it.

Hopefully I will have time to put this info, with screenshots, on
my "new" website.
