USB Flash drives are a great way to transport data. I know accountants that use them extensively.
USB flash drives are cheap, have great capacity for those bloated QuickBooks files, and are easy to carry.
They are also easy to lose, misplace, or get confidential data into the wrong hands.
Did you know that you can erase, or even format a USB flash drive and someone can still read the data files on it? That's because, just like a floppy or hard drive, erasing files just eliminates the index pointer to the file; it doesn't do a thing to remove the contents of the file. Formatting isn't much better.
The good news is that there is a free utility that makes it EASY to securely move data off of a USB device or erase empty space on the drive.
That way, when you hand someone their data on a USB flash device, they won't find the remnants of someone else's data in the dark corners of the drive.
