Vista Anyone?
A lot of readers have responded to past queries from me indicating they have no intention of moving to Vista.
I certainly understand that and am a fan of XP Pro myself. But let's dial the clock back a few years (please! and can we leave it there?) to a day when everyone was quite happy with Windows 2000 Pro and making fun of the buggy, toy-like newcomer XP.
XP Pro Service Pack 1 made XP Pro a contender. And now it's a favorite. But in the meantime, a lot of people fell behind the curve by not learning the new technology and interface.
My suggestion, with Vista Service Pack 1 on the horizon, is not to make the same mistake with Vista. Whether you bypass Vista for Vienna (due in 2009, I believe) or not, falling behind the curve is not a good thing. Catching up can be painful.
I have been writing a bit on dual boot systems so you can rely on XP, yet get a look at Vista.
One reason is that Windows 2000 Pro doesn't run like it used to. XP is starting to do likewise. Is it all of the Windows Updates, security patches, critical updates making a spaghetti mess of the operating system code? Is it intentional, as some believe, by Microsoft.
All I know is that Windows 2000 Pro machines that, if they ran as well as they did in 2001, would be just fine for an awful lot of real business applications today. Instead they are being junked because they are just too slow.
I'm starting to see the same thing happen with Windows XP Pro. Clean reinstalls help, but not for very long.
Conspiracy or not, it's real. The question is how best to deal with it.
If your job depends on it, you don't want to fall behind the curve.
