Free Computer Consultant's Tip-Of-The-Week e-Zine for October 26, 2007
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think I'll be swapping out my office computer again. To see what I'm
building look here:

What makes this a whole lot easier is an installation log. This log
begins with a baseline. If you buy a PC pre-built or build your own
computer, the process is the same. The baseline is just different.

If you buy a PC, you SHOULD get some type of recovery CD so that you
can restore the computer to the way it was when you got it (in case
of FUBAR - a military term meaning Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition).

Don't accept just a recovery partition - what if the hard drive is
scrambled?

If you build your own, the baseline is a bare drive.

Either way, start with your baseline and record everything you do to
the PC; whether it's install a program or make a change to the
registry.

Of particular note are problems solved by making changes to printer
drivers, etc.

Do NOT keep your only copy of this log on your computer - for obvious
reasons. Sometimes a yellow (or white) ruled notepad works as well
as anything.

Reinstalling Windows to your computer or restoring to factory condition
can bring new life to an old PC; and if done every 2 years or so can
mean NOT forking out the dough for a new PC every 2 - 3 years as
some people do.

Maybe add some RAM and get 5 years or more out of your investment.

And, Oh yes, I'll be loading Windows XP (to get the work done). And
probably Vista (I've warned about falling behind).

And DEFINITELY Ubuntu (a popular flavor of Linux).

P.S. - Thanks to all who bought my new eBook. If you haven't checked
it out yet, please do.
