Free Computer Consultant Tip-Of-The-Week e-Zine for November 23, 2007

This might sound a bit odd coming from an electronics geek. But
maybe that will make the message more meaningful.

It's Christmas time again, and Black Friday weekend at that. Others
may know it as Thanksgiving Weekend.

I'm not here to make Ben Bernanke's job tougher, or to outright tank
the economy. I say this because I care about my readers.

"Don't overdue the gadget and gizmo and electronics buying this year."

There, I said it.

Anyone still reading?

I know the sales look good. But by March you likely can buy it
cheaper, or you have figured out you can live without it.

This time next year you won't even be able to get a bid on it on
eBay.

Having too many electronic gadgets is just like having an albatross
hanging around your neck.

Batteries, (even recharge types, like in laptops, don't last as
long as you want), adapter cords, warranty (or lack thereof),
someplace to store it, tech support, upgrades (to make it work like
it should have originally).

You name it, I've been there.. it's my job.

Not that I'm all that big on all-in-one printers, but I am all for
multipurpose devices. I now have a cell phone PDA. It's not the
perfect phone, but it does many things for me. None perfectly, but
it has one battery, no charger needed (when it syncs via USB it also
charges the battery).

That's why laptops are kind of nice. Use it at home with another
monitor and on the road.

Think portable, think light, think mobility. Think about not
needing that self storage unit.

If you have a mind that thinks outside the box, you might want to
check out this link. It's something I'm very excited about.

A couple of weeks ago I encouraged you to have registry backups in
case of an annoyingly common system crash where either the system or
software hive of the registry is corrupt.

Did you make a backup?

Did you do a System State and check that the files in the Repair
folder of your Windows directory were updated?
