Get Windows Vista Fonts for Windows XP

Many of my readers have commented that they don't ever intend to move
to Windows Vista. In many regards I don't blame you. It even seems
that Microsoft has once again changed the date of the sales cutoff
of Windows XP - Home Edition anyway.

(P.S. - I won't work with Home Edition; too many bad experiences.
Microsoft's revenue model interferes with them delivering the right
software to everyone, IMHO. If you have been happy with Home Edition
then I'm happy for you; I only see it when someone has trouble, and
then the nightmare begins.)

Sorry, sidetracked there.

Some people like the new fonts in Vista, one of which is
named Sego UI. (Where do they get the names for these fonts?) This
font seems particularly suited for LCD displays, NOT older CRT's.

Well, it seems you can get it legally for Windows XP. If you have
Office 2007, you already have it.

And, you do need to enable ClearType.

Once you have the new font, you'll notice better differentiation
between "1" (numeral 1), "I" (capital i), "l" (lowercase L), and
"i" (lowercase letter eye).

Steps:
1. Go to Windows Live Mail Site
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
and click the "Get It Fre-" button. This will download WLinstaller.exe

2. Run WLinstaller.exe. I suggest you don't have any extra check boxes
checked. In fact, I suggest you DO NOT USE Windows Live Mail.

3. You should now have Segoe UI font. You can uninstall Live Mail
(in Control Panel, add/remove programs)

You can now make Segoe UI your system font:
1. On XP, right-click any empty place on desktop, choose Properties.
Click Appearance tab, and then click Advanced button.

2. Item drop-down list: choose Active Title Bar. Choose Segoe UI,
10 point, and turn off the "B" (for bold) button.

3. Item drop-down list: choose Menu. Choose Segoe UI 9 point,
no bold or italic. You might prefer 8 point (younger eyes).

4. Click OK twice.

Personally, it's no big deal to me on my laptop. Not really worth the
trouble for my desktop.

But, everyone's different and a lot of Vista users are bragging about
their fonts, so I thought I would pass this along.

Not a lot of blog activity recently. Between tax time and other
commitments I just haven't had the time. Hopefully that changes soon.

Until next time...
