Free Computer Consultant Tip-Of-The-Week for June 27, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Well as the world says goodbye to Windows XP and Microsoft says
goodbye to Bill Gates we are left either trying to extend XP for
a couple more years or else migrate to Vista.

Since many of you already have Vista or will be forced to get it on
your next PC I will try to sprinkle in some Vista specific tips
along the way.

Granted, many are asking the question is it time to leave Windows
for a Mac or Linux... To which I respond - maybe. More on that
in future issues.

This week it was noted that a rather popular PC guru didn't know
that there is another way to get menus to display in Vista
explorer. Humble as we all must be, we can't know everything.

So I thought I would repeat that tip here:

You can hold down the Alt key or -
To show the menu bar permanently, click the Organize button
(top left), select Layout, and tick Show Menus. Set it once and it
applies to all Explorer windows and persists across sessions
on a per-user basis.

Here's a tip for troubleshooting any version of Windows:
Sometimes when things are flaky and even a reboot isn't helping
you, and maybe your PC won't even boot properly, maybe the
problem is a USB hub or a camera or a data stick of some type.

Even many Dell and other brand monitors have a USB hub as part of
the package and we forget about them.

If things just will not straighten out, try powering off the
computer entirely, then unplug or eject everything that is
optional - USB hubs especially; then try powering the computer
back on.

Might just be what the doctor ordered. When the PC is back up
and running, then go ahead and plug things in one at a time and
note any problems.

Until next time...
