Free Computer Consultant Tip-Of-The-Week for August 22,
2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This Tip is going out later than I like this weekend, turns
out we
had some REALLY nice weather I was outside taking advantage
of
instead of getting a couple of screencasts done in the
timeframe
I was hoping to.
If you watch the two videos I posted this weekend:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxrbz33RH-A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjMnNhvBSSQ
you will see one Windows Tip, "How to Add Notepad to the
SendTo
Context Menu" as well as a demonstration of why it's handy to
have
Notepad in the SendTo menu; "How to Safely Open a Suspicious
email"
I always harp on users to never open a suspicious email, yet
I
acknowledge that it's not always easy to tell, and there can
be
valid reasons for wanting to be sure.
In the video I show an email message whose subject line was
blank
in Outlook, yet, by looking in notepad, I could see a subject
line
that indicated the message was indeed spam.
Sometimes you feel compelled to open an email because the
name
looks familiar even though you don't know exactly who it
is.
Especially in a business environment, you may feel you need
to
open it.
NEVER open a suspicious email - in general. If you feel
you
need to, do so as safely as possible. The video shows how.
Note that the video is somewhat misnamed for sake of
brevity. Some
would argue that it's never completely safe to open an email
period.
What I am trying to show is the safest way I can think of.
Until next time...
