Free Computer Consultant Tip-Of-The-Week for April 3, 2009

"Did you forget your password?"

If you have left Internet Explorer for Firefox, and I hope you have,
you probably already know that Firefox vastly improves over IE's
primitive password saving feature.

But with Firefox, the data is not secure, is difficult to share
between PC's, and does not fill in repetitive forms for you. Nor
will it create secure passwords for you.

Many of you may be familiar with RoboForm which, a paid program,
does an excellent job. A free version with some limitations is good
also.

But there is a free (for personal use) newcomer that beats RoboForm.

LastPass (www.lastpass.com) will help you create strong passwords,
like Password safe that I have touted for a long time, store them
securely, then fill in the forms that need them. From any PC.

In addition, you can store secure notes, fill in forms and even
share the data with family, friends and coworkers.

LastPass will encrypt your data, but store it on LastPass's
servers so that you can access it from anywhere on the web.

Unlike RoboForm currently, LastPass supports not just Firefox and
IE, but also Google chrome.

With lastpass, you remember just your email address that you setup
your lastpass account with and your master password.

You can then access the data across browsers (for those idiotic
sites that require IE) and from any other PC out on the web -
even Mac and Linux machines.

LastPass will likely monetize the product at some point, but
likely only for corporations, not individuals. It appears they
intend to keep it free for personal use.

As for trusting the company, they have wide support across the
internet and give a lot of details about themselves on their
website.

I'm using it and loving it; I think you might too.
