"Don't Leave Home Without It"

One of the jobs I get all too often is one that I absolutely despise.

Cleaning an infected PC.

Not only is it frustrating because most infected PC's have more than
one virus/trojan/malware and hunting down every last vestige of them
can be difficult and time consuming, but it's usually preventable.

Since it takes so much time, compounded by my hourly rate, it
usually would be money better spent just to do a clean reinstall of
the operating system, Windows XP.

But we usually don't do that because there are many programs and
tweaks installed that are not documented anywhere, and, data that
is not backed up.

Getting the system back to the same usable condition for the user
would be a headache for the user. (I create an install list for
my PC).

"Don't Leave Home Without It"
-----------------------------

I know I date myself when I use this phrase, made famous in an
American Express commercial by Karl Malden.

What I am referring to is internet security software, or more
specifically, an antivirus program. And don't let your browser
"leave home" onto the internet, without it.

The PC I cleaned up this week had none installed. The last time
I had this PC I offered to install a program but the owner wanted
to take care of that herself.

What am I supposed to do?

This PC had tons of data that was very important to the owner.

None of it backed up.

The last time I had this PC I recommended she try one or more
online backup programs.

She never did.

So I created two blog entries this week:

One to highlight a selection of internet security products; most
with a free trial of some type.

And another to list a few online backup services for those of you
who want:

1) an automatic backup
2) an offsite backup
3) don't really want to "get your hands dirty" with an external drive

But even if you have a good backup program, remember point #2 -
offsite backup. Think flood, torando, fire, theft.
