"Looking for Erin Andrews?"

I talked last time about cleaning infected PC's. I hate the job and
quite honestly, sometimes the PC is just never the same unless you
do a clean reinstall of Windows.

One of the best ways to get a PC infected is to chase the latest
online voyeurism. A few years ago it was alleged pictures of Anna
Kournikova (which I don't think ever existed).

This past week it was a video, which unfortunately did exist, of
ESPN's ultra-popular Erin Andrews.

While some may have actually gotten the video, it was almost a
certainty that your PC would pick up some malware even if you tried.

My family has been in hotel rooms in the last couple of years where
the only curtain that completely covers the windows are shears.

Don't ever expect privacy in a hotel room. I can't even look at the
ceiling and wonder if there isn't a camera in the smoke alarm or
an air vent.

But here is another tip---

If you have a webcam, keep the shudder down over the lens. If you
have a laptop, use a piece of black electrical tape to cover the
webcam when not in use.

Hackers can, and have, taken control of peoples PC's and turned on
their webcams. You can imagine how tempting this is in dorm rooms.

Knowing Erin Andrews is in a hotel with free WiFi would, in my
opinion, be a strong temptation to try and hack her PC and get to
that webcam. Just like they got to Paris Hilton's cell phone.

Once you are infected, what do you do?
--------------------------------------

I get calls all of the time from friends, friends of friends, and
other people I do not know wanting free advice or "we'll pay you"
to clean a PC.

At my hourly rate, they don't want to try to afford it; and I
don't want to do it anyway.

What's popular now
------------------------

What is gaining in popularity is re-imaging. This is the process
of intelligently analyzing a Windows PC and undoing damage without
losing data, without having to reinstall programs or Windows.

Most of the time, the results are very good.

It can clean an infected PC or just restore like new performance
to a gunked up PC.

It's not like imaging a hard drive and then restoring that image
such as with Acronis True Image software. With Acronis, you have to
take an image of the drive BEFORE it is infected so you have
something to restore.
