"Now You Can See What You Have Been Hearing"
Everyone is pretty accustomed to free long distance, so you
might wonder how a product like Skype
still has appeal.
But with so many families separated by one thing or another
anyway, now that many of you may be sending kids off to
college is a good time to mention that Skype
also does a great job of VIDEO calling - all for free.
(Skype to Skype calls are free; calling to a landline is
cheap but not free. International calls are VERY reasonable
with Skype to.)
You can put each other in your Skype contact list and set
it to notify you when a person is online. Then simply make
the call with a webcam on each end and you have a video
call.
Chances are your student has a laptop with a built in
webcam (keep a piece of black tape over it when not in use)
and if you don't have a webcam, it's very easy and
inexpensive to get one that will plug into a USB port on
your PC.
You can take a look a some great webcams
here.(I like Logitech, but Microsoft has some
good ones too).
With video, it's a little more like being there.
Fantastic especially to see your Armed Services family
member or friend you haven't seen in way too long, and
also to check up on sonny's appearance now that he is
away at college.
If you have never used Skype,
maybe now is the time.
Clean up the grill for one last Summer
blast and call me over when it's time to
eat!
Until next time...
