Acronis True Image Backup
Success Story

Acronis True Image is a product that I use everyday and rely heavily on. Yes, it's even become a crutch of sorts. But in order for you to see the value of the program, you need to know how it has bailed my keester out, time after time.

In my business, doing things right is great, but most times will bring no notice. Screwing up, on the other hand, can have dire consequences. And with electronics, the outcome is seldom certain. Mr. Murphy - of Murphy's Law fame - loves to strike; and as they say, at the worst possible time.

This is one of those times

A client brought me a new Sony VAIO laptop loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium. You can read more of my thoughts on the laptop itself and the big box store it came from on my Daily Insights blog.

He wanted to use this laptop in his office environment, but Vista Home doesn't allow the PC to be joined to a domain. Also, I didn't want his staff to struggle with Vista when they barely knew XP.

Downgrade to XP, right? No big deal, right?

Sony offers no XP drivers for it, nor a recovery CD!

Unbelievable. Of course I find this out AFTER I have formatted the drive including the recovery partition. Whoops, I know. But Sony? New laptop? No XP support? Kidding, right? Wrong.

The good news is that I try to have an Ace in the hole whenever possible. More times than not, that Ace is Acronis True Image.

Acronis True Image saves the day again!

Since I've been doing this kind of work for a long time, I make it a habit to protect the client - and myself - by creating a backup before doing anything else. And I had used my favorite software and a USB hard drive to make a complete image backup before I started.
Here are the steps to restore to where I started:

  1. Change bios to allow boot from CD first (Good computers these days have a function key you can press on bootup for Boot Selection)
  2. Insert Acronis Recovery CD in CD drive
  3. Plug in USB Hard Drive
  4. Reboot
  5. Restore from image
  6. Reboot
  7. Unplug USB Hard Drive
  8. Remove CD

Basic, simple steps. The toughest part for a novice would be changing the boot order - which Sony chose to make the simple part hard. On the contrary, Acronis True Image made the hard part simple. And me? I feel great. Wasted some time, but I feel great. He can have his laptop and either take it home, or, my suggestion - eBay it! Maybe sell it on a local auction site to a high schooler, they'd probably love it.
