You may not know what Skype is, but if you haven't heard of
it you probably are a real life Cast Away, without benefit of a
waterproof, solar powered, satellite phone. (Yep, that's
what was in the unopened box that Tom Hanks delivers at the
end of the movie!)
Many people that I have come across in my travels are relying
on a Skype phone to keep in touch with colleagues and business
contacts the world over; all at no cost.
Skype is a software program/service using voice over IP
technology, or VoIP to make calls using a PC. I, for instance,
plug in a cheap headset into my laptop, open up Skype and place
free calls.
Sidebar - Skype calls to landlines were free only until
12/31/2006. The company has pledged that calls to other Skype
users will be free permanently.
Do you have to use a headset on a PC to use
Skype?
Not at all. Some companies are making wireless phones that
have a transmitter plug into a PC, then allow you to roam
around as if you were using a traditional cordless phone. And,
some new cell phones with built in WIFI not only allow you to
make Skype WIFI calls, but it even shows up as a menu item if
you are currently connected to a WIFI network!
