Windows PC Tune Up
Vista's to blame againWith Microsoft's new operating system, Windows Vista, looming large on the horizon, many are evaluating their current PC. Boy it sure seems slow. That can be for a couple of reasons.
- You got used to its speed.
- You work on a faster computer somewhere else, either home vs. work or vice versa.
- Windows naturally slows down the more you install and the more you use it. The former due to registry and hard disk bloat, the latter due to what I call Windows self-corruption.
You definitely don't want to try to upgrade Vista over the top of a poorly tuned Windows installation. Nor do you want to throw out perfectly good hardware just because Windows can be a confusing, poorly organized, self-corrupting behemoth.
Enter another 12 step program
Actually, I didn't even count how many steps I included in the new PC Speed Up checklist. But I suppose 12 step program is kind of cliche, so maybe that should be the goal!
What I did do was lay out on the typed page the same advice I give to people in person; which is the same advice I use myself when faced with a slow PC in need of a performance tune up.
You can find it here.
Whether you are actually considering an upgrade to Vista or some new hardware, keeping your PC in good running order is always a good idea. Kind of like with your car - treat it well and it will treat you well.
Hope this information is of use to you, that's it for this week.
When was the last time you backed up YOUR PC?
